Weihnachtsgurke

Weihnachtsgurke

The Weihnachtsgurke, or Christmas Pickle, is a whimsical tradition with an uncertain origin, celebrated by placing a pickle-shaped ornament deep within the branches of the Christmas tree. There are several theories about its beginnings, with one popular tale suggesting that it originated in Germany. However, many Germans are unfamiliar with the custom, leading to speculation that it may actually be an American invention.

One story tells of a Bavarian-born American Civil War soldier who was imprisoned and, starving, begged a guard for one last pickle before he died. The guard, moved by compassion, gave him a pickle, which by some accounts, gave him the physical and mental strength to live on. After returning home, he began the tradition of hiding a pickle in the Christmas tree to ensure a year of good fortune for the person who found it. Regardless of its true origins, the Weihnachtsgurke tradition adds an element of fun to holiday festivities.
